I was gonna suggest a similar thing. This would work if you can create a report variable that will indicate whether the variable should be indented or not (like a vIndent variable).
Report variable vDataPrint(IFEQ ( .vIndent, 'N', .vData, ( ' ' + .vData) )) Then you would locate vDataPrint rather than vData I haven't tested this, but I believe it will retain the leading spaces.
