vbackdir1 is captured variable from my database so would I just use this
IF (CHKFILE(.vBackupDir1)) <> 1 THEN
   MKDIR .vBackupDir1
ENDIF

Tom,

Here is an eloquent method to check the existence of file or directory.

-- Example
SET VAR vBackupDir1 TEXT = 'XLS'
IF (CHKFILE(.vBackupDir1)) <> 1 THEN
   MKDIR .vBackupDir1
ENDIF

There is no need to use extra steps and variables
to check the existence of file or directory.

Have fun!

Very Best Regards,
