Dear R:azzak,

You have a nice system of software and hardware for scanning, labeling ,
documenting and analyzing inventory.

I noted that you capture the name of the person performing the scan. That is
useful for accountability, and also if there are questions about any items.

We went to manufacturing companies and put code-39 barcode tags with their
inventory number and description on manufacturing tools and machines. A plant
might be divided into grid sections to find machines by proximity.

You could probably use a trigger to unobtrusively add GPS coordinates as each
item is scanned. Overlayed on a floorplan, these places could be visually
located. The same would be true for places like Mississippi Chemical, and
Cytec where storage tanks and processes could be shown over an aerial
photograph.

Color coding of the labels overlaying a floorplan or map could show critical
elements in red, parts needing preventive maintenance in yellow, and areas
functioning normally in green or black and white. Color coding by dollar value
might also reveal areas requiring additional security or protection from normal
hazards such as water and fire.

Links in the database to related Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) could put a
maintenance person within one click of seeing precautions and ways to deal with
a problem.

Model and part descriptions might also be linked to see operating
specifications, as well as repair and replacement options.

I'm sure you collect date-time for each scan rather than only the date. When
inventory levels are changing, that will help any reconciliation.

Two other fields worth considering might be a photo, and also a comment field.
The person who is finding, touching, and examining is in the best position to
definitively document everything.

One of the distinctive qualities of R:Base is its dedication to, and obvious
continuous improvement.

Best wishes for your health, happiness, and continuous impR:ovement.

Randy

Two-Dimensional Bar Codes

Hi Randy,

Thank you so much for your feedback and a wonderful suggestion to
include the location code.

I'll certainly include that for customers with multiple locations.

Here is a snapshot of a complete system that will also include the
location code when scanning the products received. (see attached)

Thanks again, and stay well.
