Bo, I had to deal with the exact situation before and almost always end up creating one or more computed columns that I can use freely without losing the original values or having to parse the name. For example: FirstName MiddleName LastName PrefAddress CompFullName CompShortName CompShortAddress Sarah Emily Valencia Ms. Sarah Emily Valencia Valencia, S Ms. Valencia The first 4 columns hold the original data and the last 2 the computed data, No need to update, simply enter data in the first 4 columns and the others are computed automatically. It is also much easier data entry-wise Now you have a lot of flexibility, for example, you can easily search by any of the individual columns. You can also use the individual columns for thinks like greetings: Dear Ms. Valencia, Or… Dear Sarah, On reports and forms without having to ever recalculate/parse individual components and you still have the original data. You can see the potential of using some of the features readily available. I do the same for things like City, State and Zip Code that are usually used together in one line, obviously in the US: City State Zip CompCSZ Olathe KS 66062 Olathe, KS 66062 Now, instead of having to either merge 3 columns or enter and space them properly in a report, you only need to insert one column. Hopefully, the information above is of use. Hello again, Well, forget the date aspect. I just wonder how to move (UPDATE) the text in two or three columns into one column. Say in making name middlename and surname into one column. Simply to add the latter to the former (name). Y s Bo Franzén Stockholm University ________________________________ Från: [email protected] <[email protected]> för A. Try ADDDAY and ADDMON functions to accomplish your goal. It seems that you maybe asking for (RDATE(mon, day,yr)) function. Hope it helps!
