Novell, that is name from the past. I had a client (Public Works Department)
whose IT department refused to provide networking from them in the 1990s. I
installed Novell Lite on 5 workstation including a Server and a network
printer; whenever IT came to do the yearly inventory, they had to disconnect
all computers and hide the network printer.

The first network I installed used the ARCNet protocol with an active hub and
several passive hubs and used coaxial wiring; much cheaper than ethernet and
very reliable and at the time pretty speedy. I think I finally got rid of the
hubs, wiring and cards I had saved since I last used in the mid 1990s.

I developed a DOS based Asbestos Inventory and Management system for School
Districts back in the late 1980s. Last I heard, one of the School Districts
kept a number of DOS computer for backups when they upgraded to Windows and
still uses the DOS version 30 years later with zero maintenance.

Bruce: Yeah I remember Novell from back in the days, it was the first network
we used at the company I worked at back then. I was shocked to see this
company still using it. When I upgraded them from DOS to RBase 9, the ever
helpful John Minyo worked with me to try to get the workstations to recognize
the server install but we gave up and I didn't blame RBTI at all! So we did
local installs, which are a PITA to maintain in my opinion. Got them upgraded
to version 10, but half their machines are still Windows 95... sigh.... We're
holding off on 10.5 (at this point, probably 11) until they hopefully get these
old workstations out of here! But of course there's no guarantee that new
workstations would work with Novell I suppose! Glad that isn't my job....

Doug, Karen Tom ... thanks for the feedback.

Tom, , Doug, sounds like R:BASE runs autonomously vis-a-vis a server OS.
Advantage goes to server OS & hardware when client I/O is heavy, just like
anything else. Happy RDP access then becomes the game changer.

Or, maybe, a client-server version of R:BASE? ;)

Karen, Novell was pretty hot back in the heady DOS file server days thirty
years ago ... not going back ... nor should anyone else. Were it still
available, the DOS-based CBIS NetBIOS peer-to-peer network[1] would probably
work well for them. As for today's security, easier to maintain a tight
perimeter on one machine than ten.

Thanks all!

[1] Worked flawlessly through DOS v6.22 @1998

Been running it for years off all windows, sometimes up to 10 simultaneously
with no problem

This enables you to do things like clear ghost connections and reboot the
server if needed. And yeah, it's lightning fast (which is an issue if you're
programming and you forget that it probably won't run as fast on the
workstations). But for other clients I remote into a workstation, RBase is
installed on the server but we never activate it because no one, including me,
runs RBase on the server itself. But yeah, the company has to have trust in
you to give you unfettered access to the server. As for security... I suppose
if someone knows your username/password and what remote software you use,
that's marginally worse than someone getting into a workstation.

Bruce - R:Base does not need to be "running" on the server O/S.
It was some time ago, but I think I ran the install on the server O/S as a
"server" install, so the catch is that upgrades have to be run on the server
O/S, they won't run on a workstation.

To set up R:Base on a workstation, navigate to
[MappedDrive]\RBTI\RBGX5E\RBGX5E.EXE and "Send To" Desktop to create the
shortcut; adjust properties accordingly. I found it's much easier and saves
future headaches to accept the R:Base default install paths.

Conversely, R:Base can run on the server if an extra client seat is needed.
I'm thinking of doing that for a client. They have a workstation that I access
via Remote Desktop but find that there are often conflicts with others in the
office who need to use that computer - obviously they have priority. The
server would be an ideal seat for me - no conflict with other users and it is
probably faster than greased lightening because the data is "right there" - no
network issues to contend with.

Has anyone done this? Any considerations (server security, I know)? Any
gotchas?

Thanks,
Doug

Question:

Without taking into account the number of users, does a server install of
RBGX5E require installation on a server operating system e.g. Microsoft Windows
Server 2019, or will it run usefully on a Windows 10 workstation?

I'm thinking here of my small-shop environment, where I'd have at most two
workstation installs testing multi-user configuration.

Wondering if R:BASE concurrency features require server-OS assist.

Thanks very much, yours:
