R:Merge has a built-in R:BASE variable definition.  As far as I have been
able to determine, if you can create an R:BASE variable for it, you can
create an R:Merge variable for it...  That includes standard R:BASE lookup
variables to other tables.

That had occurred to me.  Someone tell me if this is
possible:  Can it pull data from multiple tables (not
a view, though)?  Will the report 'break' if there is
no data in one of the tables for the item?  Is the
logic in RMerge sophisticated enough that I can either
print nothing, a simple line of text, or a table of
data from a different table?

I think I'll email RBTI's support and ask these questions.
