I seem to be having a similar  “Not Connected” error. I am using Lotus Domino as the mail server. I have narrowed it down to the setting that prevents relaying. If I allow relaying without any restriction every thing works well. But if I set any kind of restrictions on relaying I get the “Not Connected” error.
