Jim,
Check out http://www.posdata.com/scripts/pt_symbol_spt1500.cfm
This PDT 1550 handheld is a product of Symbol Technologies, the barcode
scanning specialists. It includes a 'miniature scan engine [to] capture and
manage bar code data quickly and easily, and comes with 8 MB RAM, a backlit
display for poor lighting conditions. Pen input can include signature capture.
It claims one-touch data synchronization with host or network and has an
IrDA port for infrared information sharing.
It uses a Palm operating system and is available at the URL listed above
for $391.50.
Quite a price for a scanner and reader combination in a package that will
fit in your pocket.
Once you upload the data, you can put it in R:Base and do your magic.
