We have a similar problem at a client. An IBM ThinkPad, a Dell Latitude, and a Dell PC 
with a radio link, all running XP Pro, work just fine. Several other PCs, happen to be 
Dells, running XP Pro are slower than molasses in January. The PC with the radio link 
runs slowly when connected directly rather than over the radio link. We have not yet 
come up with a resolution, or even what the problem is, precisely. 

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but...
