Emmitt, Dan & James,

Thanks for your advice. I will tidy this up as suggested.

Subject: [RBASE-L] - RE: RBase Crashes on Startup - for some databases

When R:BASE is started, if it cannot find one it creates one. Even if you
alter the defaults for your database, the newly-created .cfg will still
carry the R:BASE default values. In some cases, such as the use of STATICDB
ON, you will not be able to connect to the database if another user is
connected.

Things you can do to avoid the issue:

- For individual users, make certain the .cfg is in the \windows folder.
- For network users, either put a copy of the .cfg either with the database
(if defaults vary from db to db) or in the network folder containing the
R:BASE executable, and use the -o command line switch to point to that copy.
This has the advantage of providing for only one .cfg file to maintain.
- Use a startup file that sets all the proper defaults before connecting to
the database. This is the best method - offering the most control - but can
still result in stray .cfg files if the user's icon command line doesn't
point to a valid .cfg file or one doesn't exist in their \windows folder.
- The most optimal method then is to combine the use of a startup file and
the use of the -o command line switch.

Emmitt,

Thanks very much for your suggestion - that was indeed the problem. There
are RBENGINE76.CFG in many places on that PC - any idea as to what I may
have done to create all these files ?

Thanks also Larry & James for your suggestions.

John,

Check for erroneous rbengine*.cfg files on the PC. You should only have one
of them, and it should normally be in the \windows folder.

Subject: [RBASE-L] - RBase Crashes on Startup - for some databases

I have a problem with one PC where RBase will either start properly, or
depending on the location of the database, ‘encounters a problem’, which XP
wants to tell Microsoft about. While I can navigate to all but one database
manually and connect successfully, starting these sessions up from the usual
shortcut will not work (one tells me the database is currently unavailable -
but it is). I have tried numerous alternatives, but to no avail. Some of
these databases are on my laptop, where they all work properly. In one case
if I have copied the complete folder to the PC with the problems, changed
the shortcut settings, but the error is still there.

I have given Everyone rights to the folders (although one of these which
works properly has no special shares set up), and tried copying shortcuts
that do work and changing the directories but that doesn’t work either. I
have tried reinstalling RBase as well.

This all used to work, but it seems something has changed somewhere – if
anyone has any suggestions as to what to try next they would be much
appreciated.

Thank you.
