Thanks, Larry - it's weird because I hadn't really noticed a problem until
yesterday.

All the history I ever wanted was there, the performance was fine, nothing got
my attention. It was only after re-instating my KeyMaps that I had a problem. I
always used to display a list of the special keys at the R:> as I went to that
option. All I did was try to add 4 lines of display to the 2 that I have been
displaying (current directory and database then the R:Base version).

I tried adding blank lines, I tried writing the 6 lines to a file and TYPEing
the file, I tried copying and pasting each command line to the R:>, I traced
the RMD file - all I could get was the last four lines.

I think it was only desperation that made me look at the settings for the R:>
because I could only remember that you could change the colours and the
position of the prompt. I could easily have seen the buffer setting at 5 and
not had any reason to try to find out what it should be. I changed it to 10 not
having the slightest idea what it might do and ready to change it back if that
change made everything worse.

I think what I'm getting around to is that it would be nice if the help gave
the default values for things of this type. Generally, I hope that I know what
most of these things will do when changed but I have twenty-something years of
experience using R:Base. Had I been a much newer user or an inexperienced
computer user I would probably not have thought that the value of 5 was worth
changing. Then to see the value on the image in the help at 10,000 just seemed
so different from my value. I suppose it might be safe to assume that the
values shown in the help images are the defaults in which case perhaps the
opening screen could indicate that in some way. So far, I've not been able to
find anything that confirms it either way.

Regards,
Alastair.

Then I looked at the help to find out what the Buffer Size setting did. I
didn't really understand the explanation but the image shows a value of 10,000
- rather different from 5 or 10!

The buffer controls how many lines of history in the output section of the R>
console are kept. Too many and you'll find that output to the R> console slows
down a lot. Experiment and see what works for you, and how far back you feel
you want to go.
