For some reason I can work on a problem for half an hour and then, immediately after confessing my inability to solve it, the answer becomes apparent. The last thing I did in 7.6 was create a brand new variable form (no table assigned). Apparently, version 7.1 was extremely upset to see something in the SYS_FORMS3 table without a table specified (personally, I chalk it down to jealousy on the part of 7.1 over all the new features in 7.6). I opened the database in 7.6, reassigned the form to use the SystemDummy table (that I use in 7.1) and got rid of the variable form version, and now my database opens fine in 7.1 -- Larry
