I have a client who uses TimeWand by Videx.   It's a very small, wallet-sized 
handheld size unit.  Does not scan from far-away, you have to physically 
swipe over the barcode.  In this client's instance, the exact order you scan is 
very important.   The unit has a utility that outputs the scan (the number, 
date 
and time) into a already-named .txt file on the computer with one row per 
scan.  My RBase program looks for the file, loads it into a table with an 
autonumber column so we always are sure of getting the scans in order.   Can't 
remember how much the units cost, but believe me this is a client that does NOT 
spend alot of money on anything ....
