With respect to the long term goal of world software domination, when MS began 
making noise about excising the API and breaking everyones' legacy code, there 
was a credible developer movement  toward the NIX environment.  That got MS 
attention, now the MS Evangelists aren't prophesising abandonment of the API so 
overtly.
