Artisoft / Lantastic faced this issue in the early 90's. They increased their price because people thought it was not a valid deal at the lesser price. Sad.

Oh, oh! I remember this one from undergraduate economics. Its called the inverse-sloped demand curve for luxury goods. In simple terms, the higher the price, the more its worth. (Caviar, champagne, caddies/beamers/benz/etc.) Its not the inherent value that matters as much as the perceived value. When it gets to this point, price is used as the metric for how good a thing is rather than any quantifiable metric of utility. That being true, then Platinum would surely be perceived as having higher value than any baser metal. No one would buy it. They said something must be wrong with it for that price. I raised the price 500% and sold it to the next person I talked to. Go figure. Maybe Rbase should offer Rbase Platinum for corporate decision makers that feel they have to spend big. The Platinum edition priced comparably to MS or Oracle could include all Rbases products bundled into one nice big expensive package with a years worth of VIP support for a cost that would catch the attention of corporate buyers who like to spend money. A client of mine won't budge off 7.1 ("ain't broke, so don't fix it"). Just called me to say they're getting a new server, will be running Microsoft Server 2008. They're all panicked about whether 7.1 will work on the new OS. I told them their product is out of date so RBTI will not certify that.
