Thanks, Bill, for the tip but, unfortunately, that gave the same error. The next time I started R:BASE, I got the following error "Invalid RBENGINE76.CFG command: MENU BLACK ON GRAY" then I got the the orginal error "Unrecognized command - retype it ( 40)". I restored RBENGINE76.CFG from backup so I'm fine as long as I don't open the database with the issue. Any other ideas?

You can only type a one-word command, since space is no longer the divider between words. So type the word SET. It should bring up the configuration settings. On the characters tab, click in the Blank, space, and careful type a single quote. Be sure your changes are saved when you leave. Now when you try to set blank to a space, you get the errror "Unrecognized command - retype it ( 40)". You also get that same error when you do a show char. Next, I went to "Settings" in Database Explorer then went to Configuration Settings to change it there. I got the same error. How can I set the BLANK special character back to a space?
