FWIW, there MUST be at least one printer (even a generic TEXT printer)
installed for the R:BASE session.

In reference to the sample database, I bet you have used the old
full installer and not the latest full installer with everything
up-to-date. Any subsequent updates, when applied, do NOT include
samples and that is the reason you see the old samples in the same
directory.
