Personally, I cannot comment unless I have full knowledge and
details of everything. There are many factors which can result in
a scenario like yours.

A few suggestions:

01. Revisit the entire code, calling routines, from start to end.

02. Check CHARacter SETtings, including IDQUOUTES.

03. Verify the exact result of dotted variable used in your code.

04. In your original post, there was no source nor routine defined
     that created the ".vfromspec" variable.

05. You never mentioned the exact -ERROR- message.

06. SET MESSAGES ON and ERROR MESSAGES ON prior to running or
     TRAcing the code
