Javier,

I have a friend who, back in the 1980s, was one of the first people I knew
with an IBM PC. He went all-out and got the CGA monitor. A few years
later, I bought an AT with EGA. Sean liked the look, but was "waiting for
the price to come down" before upgrading to EGA. Then came VGA, and I
immediately went there. Not Sean. He was still waiting for the prices to
come down.

The moral of that story, in this context, is that it really doesn't pay to
be versions behind, but we all have our reasons. We still have significant
pieces of code running in 6.5, and we still have one location running mostly
DOS. I hate it, it drives me nuts. But there are reasons for both
conditions. We now refuse to do any development in either DOS or 6.5. If a
piece of one of those needs to be changed, we convert it.

My clear and unequivocal advice is to go directly to Extreme and don't look
back. You won't regret it. After all, it is only a matter of time until
7.6 is obsolete. If you invest in 7.6 now, you'll simply be facing the same
question all together too soon.

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Upgrading

Hello,

I am currently still using 7.5 and considering upgrading to a newer version.
7.5 has worked extremely well for me, but since it is no longer a supported
product, the need to upgrade has become apparent.

I would be interested to know what versions you are using and what has been
your experience with the different versions.

My understanding of the following version is as follows:

7.6 - 7.5 with a host of additional and very cool features
Turbo V8.0 - Same as 7.6 but with larger limits and capability to serve as
front end for Oracle and SQL Server databases
eXtreme 9.0 - 32 - Newer/better version of 7.6
eXtreme 9.0 - 64 - Newer/better version of Turbo V8.0

In and ideal world, the obvious choice would be to upgrade to eXtreme
9.0-64; however, since (in my case) the upgrade involves not just the
license but also the compiler and any other applications I would want to
include (Charts, R:Magellan and so forth), the cost of upgrading to eXtreme
9.0-64 becomes (considerably???) higher than, say 7.6.

Do you have any thoughts on the different versions? Has anyone run speed
benchmarks between the different versions? How much difference is there
between the older 7.6/v8.0 and the newer 9.0-32/9.0-64?

Any thought you have in the subject would be appreciated.

Javier,
