Javier, In my opinion, the only reason to go to either 7.6 or 9.0-32 is to preserve the ability to connect from older versions that need the 32-bit-pointer versions.
So if you can get past the legacy connectivity issue, I would say go straight to 9.0. Almost everything old works (but looks better), and the new capabilities are worth it.
