I got what he was saying. <CTRL> <Left Mouse> sets the lasso on items in the region. The region corners then light up regardless of what is lassoed. A second <CTRL> <Left Mouse> on the region did not un-select the region, but by playing around, I found that <SHIFT> <Left Mouse> on the region border unselects the region and also works to unselect any particular item lassoed. After that, lasso works as usual. Details, details.
