I should note that the same line pasted into a 7.5 version database
connects fine. Is there something different with V8?

Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 126 (Rbase
7.5 database driver)
Any clues as to what error 126 is and is it possible to connect a
7.5 database to a V8 via
ODBC? I would expect to be able to do this, but I must have
something amiss.
