One way to see what files are being accessed is to use Process Monitor -
procmon.exe.  I am not sure if you have tried this, but if not, if you
select the R:Base exe as the process in the filter (from the list of active
processes) and look at the file activity you will soon see what R:Base is
doing in regard to files.  There is also a summary available which provides
details of the activity.

I've seen it mentioned several times on this list that database speed is
affected by the number of files in the database subdirectory.   I'm not sure
if anyone would know the answer to this, but what if the database is located
in a separate directory?   RBase would be run from the program directory
which could have many many files, connect to the database in another
directory ....
