You may have to not "test" it.

Save the form, exit and run it and see if it works.

Remember testing the form in the designer puts data in "read only".

 Thanks.  I see that, and I try building a very simple expression to 
reference a text column in another table and can't get it to work.  Are 
there some rules that govern this sort of lookup?  When I hit the test 
button, it fails without giving me any reason for the failure.

I'm trying to reference pf, or patient first name, from pat where pn= apptpn 
in the single form table.
