I came across this with 6.5 at multiple sites. No problem with WIN NT4, but
it cropped up with Windows Server. One tech cured it by changing
the optimistic lock setting, but some months (years?) later the problem
returned and optimistic lock settings made no difference.

Have you tried printing reports with two+ people connected? In my case they
too turned to molasses.
