I looked in the feasibility of printing my own checks a while back and I
came to the conclusion that it is cheaper to order them.
As Dennis mentioned, you will need to use magnetic ink/toner; many banks
will have to process checks manually if magnetic ink is not used and will
assess an extra charge per check. I recall it was available for most
mainline printers but the cost was higher.
Also, at the time the MICR font was not available for free download and
there was cost associated with it.
By the time I added all expenses, including paper with safety features, I
figured it was much cheaper (at least for my projected quantities) to order
the pre-printed checks and simply print the name, amount, address and memo
which you can do with any printer. Plenty of reasonably priced suppliers out
there.
