We used to use Ipswitch imail instant messaging which was an internal system
only,  its gotten pricey now but I bet there are others that are out there.

Windows has had something like that built in for quite a while.

Pre win 7 and Vista, try "Net Send" at a cmd prompt.

Win 7  and up try Msg.exe at a cmd prompt

I am pretty sure with some fiddling you can glue this together to be passed
from Rbase.
