It does sound like "much ado about nothing".
Sometimes happens when you have authority over much but responsible for little.

As an active directory user, as far as I know, once you are authorized and given access rights, there is no effect on running applications. Rbase runs just fine, ignorant of active directory, as long as your rights allow you access to the shared drive.
An application could query the active directory for user name, rights etc, to avoid having to log in to the application, but as far as I know does not have to.
