Dear Karen,
I can’t answer your question about R:Base, but Excel does have
the option to password protect all or part of an Excel file. To require a
password to open the file, (this is for Excel 2010, your mileage may vary with
other versions) go to File->Info->Protect Workbook->Encrypt with Password.
There are other options that will allow for finer grained control under Protect
Workbook, and you can also protect just parts of a workbook with some of the
commands in the Changes section of the Review tab.

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Exporting to spreadsheet
I love assigning passwords to PDF files as my output, but do we have the
ability to assign a password to an Excel spreadsheet? (And here I'm just
guessing that in Excel you CAN assign passwords to open a file? I admit I've
never seen one yet.). I don't see what looks like a password option in the
gateway export; would there be any interest in my asking that as an enhancement
if it doesn't exist?
