A client of mine just went thru this last month. We needed to replace some old
scanners whose reliability was shot. After research and trying and returning a
few, they settled on this one:
http://www.barcodesinc.com/opticon/part-opn2004.htm#reviews

Not sure how you will be scanning, whether one at a time or as a batch, but
this client scans 99% of the time as a batch so that's what was important to
us. We are not using scanners here as a keyboard wedge.

It's a tiny little thing, barely bigger than a thumb drive. There is no
keypad, which their other scanners had so they could key in a barcode that
couldn't be scanned, but they decided to forego it. It charges itself by the
USB port of the computer, so no electric plugin. The manual is mostly good, I
did figure it all out myself, but could be organized better for initial setup
instructions. But basically you set it up to create a text file, and when you
plug it in the computer it is recognized as if it was a USB drive. So in
RBase you just "load tablename from e:\scanned.txt as ascii" and away you go!

If by any chance you decide to get this, give me a holler and I'll help you
thru the setup alot faster. They've been using it for just barely over a
month so not alot of time on them yet, but so far no complaints.

Karen

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Barcode readers and sorting returns

We are looking for good barcode readers to help us sort/warehouse/refurb retail
store returns. All items should have ISBN or barcodes IDs. The returns would be
a random mix of anything the customer got back from their stores in continually
changing volumes. Sorting is step 1. We will need to track what came, where it
is stored, volume, and labels for boxes once we send them back. There are many
barcode readers on the market. Are there any that really standout and work well
with RBase?
