Michael,If there is no need to retain the note.txt file then why not consider
the following.
--offnote.cmd
SET VAR vpnum REAL
IF vpnum IS NULL OR vpnum = 0 THEN
  RETURN
ENDIF
BROWSE (IFNE(dictdata,'DICTATED BUT NOT READ TO EXPEDITE FILING',dictdata,+
(SFIL('#',76))))=76 FROM offnotes WHERE patnumbr = .vpnum +
ORDER BY RDATE DESC, linenum ASC NOCHG OPTION WINDOW_STATE MAXIMIZED|+
READONLY ON
RETURN
Using the BROWSE command against the original table removes the need tocreate a
temporary table, the IFNE function replaces the UPDATE of theof the temporary
data, the various options makes the data read only anddisplayed maximized. No
temporary file is used so your command is notdependent on accessing windows
commands for creating and accessing
note.txt file

update, it stopped working. The error message is...

Strange, it works when I trace it.

ENDENDIFSET HEADINGS OFFDROP TABLE offnotes_dupPROJECT TEMPORARY offnotes_dup
FROM offnotes USING * +WHERE patnumbr = .vpnumUPDATE offnotes_dup SET dictdata
=
+'############################################################################'
+WHERE dictdata = 'DICTATED BUT NOT READ TO EXPEDITE FILING'OUTPUT
u:\note.txtSELECT dictdata FROM offnotes_dup +WHERE patnumbr = .vpnum ORDER BY
rdate_=D linenum=AOUTPUT SCREENLAUNCH u:\note.txtERASE u:\note.txtLABEL
ENDRETURN
