Steve, R:BASE does not have an array data type. It's a useful construct in other programming languages. But I have found that there is very little you can do in an array data type that you cannot do another way in R:BASE.
Conceptually, every table, view, query, and temporary table is an array. You can put them in order, do aggregate math on their collections, cycle through the set with cursors (and scalar variables). That's how I would defend R:BASE in the programmers' lunchroom.
