Thank you all for pointing me in the right direction. I had a look at the
files from that day and found one that had an unmatched " at the end of the
file, and it wasn't the file I thought had caused the problem, so that
explains why the trace worked.
And I do need to change that .vfile to &vfile - not sure how I missed that
one. Strange that it works under normal circumstances.
Now I need to figure out how the accounting program created the problem
file... but that's another story.

We too have had something like this in the past, as Rich and Larry
suggested, it was due to a bad end of file character.
