I use VPN to connect to networks at some of my clients.

At dial-up modem speeds, starting R:Base on my computer and then
connecting to a database on the network at the other end of the VPN
connection can be very slow. For example if there is a 100 MB
database on their network, and I map the network folder to a drive on
my computer, and then at the R> prompt change to that drive and type
CONNECT dbname, it can take 5 minutes before the R> prompt
returns. Other commands that follow don't all have that same delay,
but there will be many long delays in a typically set of R:Base
commands.

However, if I am connected at high-speed, for example a 256kbps
symetrical DSL line, it seems only a little slower than actually having
my computer plugged in to a port on their network.
