Dennis:

Actually, if you run an R:Base front end on the host system in the VPN
scenario, the response time should be very good.

However, you'll run into a major bottleneck if you try to run an R:Base
front end on your remote system and try to access a database with it on a
distant host via VPN even with a fast connection.

As long as you do all of the processing on a computer that's on the same
LAN and just send keystrokes and screen refreshes to the remote computer,
you should have reasonable response times.

I used a dial-up 26.4 connection to my VPN to do my daily AUTOCHKs and
development work for years until I got my cable modem 6 months ago.

Thanks Bill,

For a typical RBase app, it doesn't sound like a VPN would be a viable
solution at dial-up modem speeds.

I recall two years ago at the User Meeting when the good Doctor was
running
RBase/Tango/Oterro and NOT having RBase as the front end resulted in
lightening response times. So, I wasn't comparing that with a VPN
solution.
But, it's always nice for your customer base to have options.
