I've been away for a while and am just catching up of the list so forgive me if
this has been suggested already or the problem is solved.
What happens if you have the umlaut y's in the field and the you press [End] and
then [Backspace] out all the characters?
It's only one extra key-press but I've used this technique to get an "empty"
field for years - spaces are not quite the same as nothing. You can also use
[Home] & [Delete] - but you can't always see when the field is empty that way.
The [Control] & [Function] keys are equally as good - it just depends on what
your users are used to doing.
