A switch is an intelligent hub.
using a hub the data is returned to every workstation.  The workstations
that did not request the info say sorry, that's not mine.
with a switch, the info is returned to only the requesting work station.
Less traffic on the network and results in faster thruput.  The difference
in cost does no longer justify using hubs.  I have been insisting on
switches for some time now.  My customers are happy. and those that I
switched from hubs to switches have really noticed the difference.  I use
3COM switches, good reliability and quiet operation.
