A quick thought along a different line... Is it possible you occaisonally hit a drive which has gone into it's energy saving 'sleep' mode? Something may trigger your error while the drive is winding up slowly. Kind of a long shot. You might try setting up a cron file to keep your drives awake and see if it helps.
