Ian - First, make sure you don't have any extraneous RBASE.CFG or RBASE.INI files in your search path.
Then, if you can consistently replicate the problem, please submit it to RDCC, along with a copy of the database and application files. There have been a number of bug fixes for this asterisk problem in DATE fields (although I really like calling them "twinkles"!), but I have still seen this sporadically even in the newest version. I haven't been able to replicate it reliably enough to submit it to the RDCC.
