        Under Win2K Pro SP2 and version 1.851 I'm getting the results you
are getting under NT4.0.  i.e. ThisIsLongFileName.DAT is shown as 

ThisIs~1.DAT   433  02/23/02   2:30pm  ThisIsLongFileName.DAT

when I do DIR from the R> prompt.
