Gateway has some limits.  It really depends on what kind of file you want.  
You should use the unload command, and use whatever options you need.
Try this:

R>out mufile.txt
R>unload data for mybigtable as ascii
R>out screen

This will give you a nice comma delimited ascii file with the columns in the 
same order that they are in the table.
