Hi Dennis, Plextor PlexWriter (24x10x40 or 32x12x40) is very good, but is also one of the most expensive brands on the market. I use LG 24x10x40 (OEM version), and it cost about 50% less than Plextor at that time. LG (Lucky Goldstar) is a Korean electronic giant, and I have had absolutely no problem with the drive in the past 4 months using it almost daily. I know that LG now has a faster drive at 32x10x40. Even the OEM version of LG comes with the basic version of Roxio CD Creator burner software, a further saving. Other brands worth considering are Sony, LiteOn, Pioneer and Panasonic, to name a few. These are internal drives and all have an adequate buffer.
USB CDRW drives are definitely more convenient and flexible, for obvious reasons. They are also the slowest in the pack. For example, the HP 8230e performs at 4x4x6, a typical speed for USB CDRW drives today. BTW, I don't see any good reason to use an external drive unless you don't have a vacant drive bay. Please remember to use good quality CDs whose speed matches your CDRW drive, to derive optimal benefits. I always use Verbatim. To avoid possible errors, I prefer to use the same drive as both source and destination, even though I also have a DVD drive in the computer.
