First off - a special thanks to the staff at RBTI for dropping their enormous workload to try and brainstorm a solution to a recurring problem for us.  The solution has yet to be found, but it was helpful to be able to just stop by the offices at RBTI and have everyone drop what they were doing and lend a hand.  Again, many thanks.

On the same topic, I was wondering about the FILES setting.  It seems that everyone tends to set this to about 60, but my question is - why so high?  What files are being opened by R:Base other than the command files that the user runs?  Does this setting allocate file handles or memory space?  Our problem of corrupted indexes and "ghost" rows has gone away (for now) with the removal of FK's and increasing the FILES setting from 30 to 60.  I'm not sure which of these changes, if any, was the solution, but we continue to test.  I was hoping that someone could shed more light on the FILES setting to help troubleshoot.

TIA

William Mason
