USER.EXE is one of the core parts of Windows (it contains User Interface
routines that all Windows programs use). USER.EXE is legacy code from 16
bit Windows -- many times in Win95/Win98 32 bit functions calls are
"thunked" down to 16 bit function calls and wind up using the old legacy
code.
It is possible for USER.EXE to become corrupt, in which case you should
restore it from the Windows setup disks you initially used to setup this
computer. However, in the case of corruption you would expect to see more
widespread problems than you are having.
<<

I don't think it's a matter of corruption because I can'duplicate the
problem and it happen only from time to time.

I did find a report on the internet of someone who was experiencing
USER.EXE
crashes and it turned out to be due to bad hardware (he had overclocked a
pention from 600 to 800 Mhz). So it is possible that the problem is due to
hardware rather than the particular program that happens to be running at
the time. If the problem only ever occurs on one PC, I would check the CPU
and power supply.
<<

My PC is not overclocked and seems to run fine ...
The question is : Why is USER.EXE running and who did launch it ?

I did try to duplicate the situation as it was supposed to be when the
problem happen, and I did't see any USER.EXE task ...

Strange ...
Thanks for your help,
