The pre-leading blank space is reserved for the CURRENCY Symbol.

It also depends on the LOCATION of CURRENCY Symbol.

To display CURRENCY SETtings, at the mighty R> prompt, type:

SHOW CURRENCY

That should display the current setting for CURRENCY, including:

. SYMBOL
. LOCATION
. DIGITS
. CONVENTION
