Posts: 1 I'm a long time VB/VB.NET programmer (hobbyist) and,
having recently switched to using Mac, I wanted a way to write software for OS
X. Obviously Visual Studio isn't capable of compiling for OS X so I went
looking for an alternative. I tried using Xcode but it is just way too
complicated for a non-C programmer like me. Then I found Real Studio.

First I have to say Kudos! Real Studio is a great piece of software in many
ways. I love the simplicity of the design and how easy it is to work with. It
reminds me a lot of Visual Basic 6. I love the fact that it compiles to
stand-alone executables with no platform requirements like CLR and that it is
cross-platform. That was a biggie for me as I use Linux a lot and now that OS X
is in my portfolio I can write an app that will work on any platform. Once the
new licensing scheme kicks in I'll be able to code at work, home and on the
road. Nice!

That said, I have to admit that I'm been somewhat disappointed in the lack of
features in the designer and codebase. Simple tasks that I took for granted in
VB are more complicated in Real Studio simply because of the lack of
functionality. For example, there is no intrisic treeview control. I know you
can use the ListBox to create one but it's much more work and not nearly as
classy as the native TV control in VB. Another is a lack of methods and
function compared to similar controls in VB, such as things like there is no
method (that I've found anyway) to return the number of lines in a TextArea. I
realize that a number of developers like MBS and Einhugur have stepped up and
created third-party controls to help fill the gaps but that requires having to
shell out more money.

I guess I've been spoiled by the vast number of internal controls and
third-party add-ons for VB because I feel that Real Studio is missing a lot of
the essentials. As I said, Real Studio is a great product. It brings a solid
programming platform to the three major OS groups. I just hope that some of the
missing features and controls will be added as development continues.

you said. REALstudio will probably never be able to compete feature-for-feature
with CLR languages on Windows, ever. That being said, CLR can't compete with
REALstudio feature-for-feature on any other platform.

Einhugur http://www.einhugur.com/index.html for a good TreeView, alternate
Grid, Date, Time, etc. controls.

The marketshare of Real Studio is considerably smaller than anything Microsoft
or Apple does. That dictates many of the 'lacks' you mention. Because of the
smaller market it's very hard to make a living selling developer controls for
Real Studio. Part of the problem is that many in the RS community aren't
willing to pay much, if anything, for add-ons.

I suspect it's the same with Visual Studio but because it's HUGE compared to RS
there are many more people willing to support the 3rd party developers. I know
when I was in the VB6 world we paid over $1k/developer/year to keep controls
updated for the staff. I doubt I pay more than $500/per year for my entire
staff to stay updated in Real Studio.

I've written about this issue (and many others) a number of times at
http://www.bkeeneybriefs.com if you haven't already found it.

returns number of hard lines... not including word-wrapped lines....

And you will find custom controls 1000x easier to create with RS than VB
