Activity Monitor show RS running at 50-99% while idling(!). I'm using the latest release 2012.r2, though not the latest model iMac (2008 3.06GHz, 4Gb) OS X 10.8.2, but this is not the first release to do this. I've experienced in a lot of releases. Any ideas? Should I just accept it as a fact of life - or pony up with the cash for a new mac? (if that makes a difference) _________________ Why make it simple if it can be made complicated? http://www.laniesoftware.com Top npalardy Post subject: Re: IDE and Debugger almost grinding to a halt...Posted: Fri Jan 04, 2013 3:44 pm Real Software Engineer Joined: Sat Dec 24, 2005 8:18 pm Posts: 7641 Location: Canada, Alberta, Near Red Deer Open activity monitor & have a look at the # of page ins & page outs Then click on the Real Studio process & inspect it again check the number of page ins I suspect that your getting a lot of paging going on with only 4Gb memory - and that means things will slow down as they get written to and read from disk _________________ My web site Great White Software RBLibrary.com REALbasic learning Top kermit Post subject: Re: IDE and Debugger almost grinding to a halt...Posted: Fri Jan 04, 2013 4:07 pm Joined: Mon May 30, 2011 12:56 am Posts: 580 Quote: only 4Gb memory ONLY 4Gb memory? Don't know what system you're on but Mountain Lion requires 2GB minimum. The OS alone uses quite a lot some times. I currently have about 6 small apps idling here and I have 5,5GB free of my 12GB. Max it! It's cheap Sorry about the "off-topic" post _________________ http://www.linkedin.com/in/albinkiland Dev. iMac 27" + 2x22" LG (2.8GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM, 120GB SSD) OS X 10.8 REAL.Studio Web Edition 2011r3 Top Lazze Post subject: Re: IDE and Debugger almost grinding to a halt...Posted: Fri Jan 04, 2013 5:38 pm Joined: Thu Jul 27, 2006 7:32 am Posts: 106 Location: Esbjerg, Denmark Well - unfortunately I also suspect it may be low on RAM (though I remember running flawlessly on my old G5). I just started it up, ran my project, and after less than 5 minutes it's up to 107 page ins, 746Mb real and 669 virtual memory. It wouldn't surprise me either, if Mountain Lion consumes a lot of memory on this "old" machine. It has become somewhat of an effort to get through the day without pulling my hair out. But since this is a 2008 iMac, it's maxed at 4Gb, so it really leaves me few options. I could downgrade to an earlier version of OS X, but as a (freeware as it is) developer, I feel I have to be able to test against the latest iteration of OS X. Do any of you have any advice as to how I persuade my wife to spend our hard earned money on a new iMac? _________________ Why make it simple if it can be made complicated? http://www.laniesoftware.com Top Display posts from previous: All posts1 day7 days2 weeks1 month3 months6 months1 year Sort by AuthorPost timeSubject AscendingDescending Page 1 of 1 [ 6 posts ]
