A file server is not a workstation that just isn't being used. A file server
performs many tasks necessary for proper operations on a network.
I understand using a peer to peer workstation as a pseudo file server is a low cost option, but in reality, it's a poor one where you make so many tradeoffs, in the longer run you are just way better off installing a dedicated file server.
IMHO when you reach 5 workstations, it's time to bite the bullet and buy a
dedicated server. A fully equipped 5 user server running Windows Server
2003 can be had for under $5,000.00. When you consider the performance
benefits, redundancy, etc. of a dedicated server I would not hesitate to go
that way. Cost can even be spread out on a lease. Peer-to-peer is
inefficient and more susceptible to hacking, virus infection and a poorer
performer than a dedicated server.
