Victor: This is a very enlightening discussion as many of us had gotten bit before and realize the cost and effort required to get rid of a virus and though this forum we can share the benefit of our (painful) experiences. It is no longer a matter of whether you are going to get hit or not but when you are going to have problems...as corny as it sounds, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. IMHO, if this thread helps a single developer prevent an infection or helps another in getting his computer back to normal, then the bandwidth used is definitely worth it. In my opinion, there is not one solution that works for everybody, but a combination of options based on the work you do, how much you access the internet, the volume and content of the e-mails you send/receive, the type of Internet connection you have and last but not least the IP provider and type of IP connection you use (dynamic or static). The main thing is that you are aware of the limitation of the software you use, Explorer for example has a number of setting that you can use to enable and/or disable features; it is up to the individual user to determine what level of security you are willing to tolerate and enable/disable features accordingly and use complimentary software to compensate as needed. In addition to the software I mentioned in my previous post, I also use ZoneAlarm (free) for a firewall as well as a firewall build-in in my router that closes the back door access (or so they claim) to the network from the Internet. It is pathetic that we have to use all these precautions, but under the current "state of the Internet," it is an absolute must. Javier,

But just remember that because of the programs you run on your computer you are a much bigger target than me. I not saying that what I suggest is a replacement for good common sense, but you do because a much smaller target for bad things to happen if you get off the beaten path when it come to internet software. Also check out www.firegate.net. They sell a firewall based on linux that scans all incoming and outgoing traffic (Email,Web,Ftp) for viruses. The nice thing the worm/virus never gets to the user.
