David,   This is an interesting problem that I am going to get to the bottom of with some testing but for the next couple of days I am off on another project.   I am going to try projecting an new table with the same data but different column names and see if I get the same results.   If this works then will look for the problem in the structure of the database. Or does it have a foreign key constraint on it? This time sounds WAY slower than any simple indexed query I've ever run on any version of R:Base!
